Book Description
This book is a board review of psychiatric topics in USMLE step II and III for medical students and residents preparing for the exams. Purpose: The book's purpose is to prepare students for the psychiatry questions found in USLME parts II and III in a concise and rapid manner. The authors state that it may be helpful for physician assistant students as well. This is a popular style of book in American medical schools due to time constraints and the daunting amount of material covered in part II and III. It is difficult to say if the authors meet their objectives because I did not use the-book for USMLE II and III. While the topics covered are often found in the tests, practicing the questions is more important than studying the very terse topic reviews found in books like this.
Audience:
The targeted readers are medical students and junior residents preparing for step II and III who are not psychiatry residents.
Features:
This board review book briefly covers the most common psychiatric disorders with little review of DSM-IV criteria for diagnosis. It covers the key terminology and commonly asked "facts". Important detail is lacking, and the book is good only for the third year medical school clerkship level.
Assessment:
This book is adequate review of psychiatry for the USMLE II and III and would fit best with medical students or residents in a non-psychiatric residency program preparing for the exams.
